RUSKIN and RIVERVIEW, just 12 miles apart, are among the 100 best cities in Florida to raise a family, according to Niche.com, a website that focuses on rankings and reviews of cities, neighborhoods, colleges and K-12 schools. Niche.com was formerly called College Prowler, founded by an entrepreneurship student of Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business.

To rank places, Niche.com uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Department of Education, FBI, Brookings Institute, National Center for Education Statistics, Corporation for National & Community Service, and other providers of public data.

In the list of the 100 Best Places in Florida to Raise a Family, the top 15 are:

7. Historic Homes
Two historic homes are associated to Ruskin’s first college, Ruskin College. One is the three-story residence of the college president and his family. Bearing architectural details reminiscent of a Swiss chalet and surviving a raging fire that devastated the campus in 1918, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The second home is a three-story frame home, with a three-story tower, built by the college president’s brother-in-law, who together bought around 13,000 acres of raw land in Ruskin.

General Tampa Area

Today, Tampa is part of the metropolitan area most commonly referred to as the Tampa Bay Area. For U.S. Census purposes, Tampa is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.
